Nikolaev is primarily known as the city of shipbuilders . This is no accident . Nikolaev was founded in 1789 as a shipyard . The city is located near the Black Sea and is a major sea and river port. Therefore, it is the center of shipbuilding in Ukraine . In addition, the city has also an easy , perfume and food industries. Mykolaiv is also great transport links.

Nikolaev has two universities - Nikolaev Shipbuilding Institute and the Pedagogical Institute . One of the attractions is the Nikolaev Astronomical Observatory . Amongthe cultural institutions theaters Ukrainian and Russian drama ,musical comedy , puppet theater , the philharmonic society . One of the most famous museums are Nikolaev shipbuilding museum and art museum named Vereshchagin .
