Feed Me Better is the name of thecampaign run by TV chef, JamieOliver, to improve eating habits inBritish schools. Jamie is popular withyoung people all over Britain becauseof his cookery programmes. Hisingredients are fresh, his recipes aresimple, and his meals are absolutelydelicious.So when he found out what Britainsschoolchildren were eating at school,he went on the warpath. Hediscovered that school dinners centredaround processed food, chips andburgers, and that children wereincapable of recognising basicvegetables. So Jamie resolved to dosomething about it.He decided to make a TV series calledJamies School Dinners which showedthe successes and failures of hisattempt to improve the dinner menuof a school in Greenwich, London. Hewas assisted by the school dinner lady,Nora Sands, who was keen to learnhow to give the children a morebalanced meal while not exceeding herbudget.At the same time as the programmeswere being filmed, Jamie ran anational campaign called Feed MeBetter to bring the state of the nationsschool dinners to the attention of thegovernment.As a result of the 300,000-signaturepetition that Jamie presented to PrimeMinister Tony Blair in the spring of2005, new legislation was brought in tocontrol school dinners. Now childrenare promised two pieces of fruit withtheir meal, and fizzy drinks, sweets,chocolate and crisps are banned.Jamie Oliver has shown that it ispossible to do something positive forBritains schoolchildren instead of justusing them to make money.
