Exercise 1
Tenses

Put
the verb in brackets in the correct tense. The tenses used are Present Simple,
Present Continuous, Past Perfect, and will. There are also examples of the
infinitive.





Example: Yesterday
I went (go) to London. I wanted to do some shopping.




Mrs Hay _________ (drive) along a small
country road when she _________ (see) a man at the side of the road. He
_________ (wave) and pointing at his car.

Mrs Hay _________ (stop) and _________ (ask)
the man if he was all right.


"My cars broken down," said the
man.

"Where do you want _________ (go)?"
asked Mrs Hay.

"London,"
replied the man.


"Well, I _________ (not go) to London, but I _________
(give) you a lift to the station, if you like." On the way they chatted.


"_________ you _________ (work) in London?" asked Mrs
Hay.


"No, I dont. I _________ (run) my own
business in Oxford.
But today I _________ (have) lunch with a friend in London - we always _________ (have) lunch
together on Fridays. I promised _________ (meet) her at one oclock."


"Theres a train at 11.30. I dont think
you _________ (be) late for your appointment."

When they arrived at the station, a train
_________ (stand) at the platform.

"Thats your train," said Mrs Hay.

"You _________ (catch) it if youre
quick."

After the man _________ (get out) of the car,

Mrs Hay _________ (drive away). A few minutes later she realised that she
_________ (make) a mistake: it was the wrong train. She went back to the
station, but the train wasnt there: it _________ already _________ (leave)!
She went into the station and asked at the information desk where the train was
going. "Edinburgh,"
the information clerk told her.


"Where does it stop?" asked Mrs
Hay.

"Its the express service," the
clerk told her.

"It doesnt stop until it gets to Edinburgh.”

MrsHay (was driving) along a small country road when she (saw) a manat the side of the road.
He (was waving) and pointing at his car.
MrsHay (stopped) and (asked) the man if he was all right.
"Mycars broken down," said the man.
"Wheredo you want (to go)?" asked Mrs Hay.
"London,"replied the man.
"Well,I (am not going) to London, but I (will give) you a lift to thestation, if you like."
On the way they chatted.

 (Do you work) in London?" askedMrs Hay.
"No,I dont. I (run) my own business in Oxford.
Buttoday I (am having) lunch with a friend in London - we always (have)lunch together on Fridays.
 I promised (to meet) her at oneoclock."
"Theresa train at 11.30. I dont think you (will be) late for yourappointment."
Whenthey arrived at the station, a train (was standing) at the platform.
"Thatsyour train," said Mrs Hay."You(will catch) it if youre quick."
Afterthe man (had got out) of the car, Mrs Hay (drove away).
A few minuteslater she realised that she (had made) a mistake: it was the wrongtrain.
She went back to the station, but the train wasnt there: it (had alreadyleft)!

Shewent into the station and asked at the information desk where the train was going.
"Edinburgh," the information clerk told her."Wheredoes it stop?" asked Mrs Hay."Itsthe express service," the clerk told her."Itdoesnt stop until it gets to Edinburgh.”
